One Hundred Years ago, the Great War – the War To End All Wars – at last came to an end. This play captures just a little of the horror of that dreadful warfare, focusing on two incidents. A shocking and heart-felt cry describing a brother-at-arms dying of gas poisoning, illustrated in unforgettable words by the great war poet, Wilfred Owen, in his poem "Gas". And we discover what actually happened to just one of the boys from Charterhouse School, who was unlucky enough to be of military age (just) to be caught up in the tragedy of 1914 to 1918. This moving and thought provoking play is unmissable.

Calder Bookshop and Theatre
by Anatole Glebov

Tickets: £12 - £15 - Special Offer 2 for 1 tickets

The Soviet ideal of Womanhood is the subject of Glebov's play Inga – if such an ideal could exist, if being Man's equal whilst maintaining feminine 'difference' was even possible in that society.
The action takes place in a pre-revolutionary clothing factory which Inga must drag into the Soviet era – a task to be completed in the face of the entrenched attitudes of the women as well as the men with whom she lives and works.
A proto- feminist play still relevant 90 years after it was first staged.

Tracey Ann Wood – Inga
Jeremiah O Conno – Dimitri
Alexandra Dionelis – Glafeera
Maria Estevez-Serrano – Mera
Gary Heron – Somov
John Terence – Ryzhov
Mark Shaer – Nemtsevitch
Stephanie Ellyne – Veronica
Simon Bennett – Boltikov
Josephine Liptrott – Nastya

"Well staged at the John Calder Bookshop Theatre, this is an extraordinary piece."
Camden New Journal

5 Stars
"The performances are sublime from beginning to end. It is undeniable that the interpretation of these actresses and actors transport the audience to a historical moment of transition in Soviet society, to a community in which emotions had a place." La Tundra

4 Stars
"Essentially, this is a play about individuals choosing where they stand, and justifying it to the people with whom they have to co exist. By having the audience placed so inescapably in the action, we were offered as much of a choice as any of the characters." The Spy in the Stalls

Located in the very heart of London where gentrification has done for most places like this we find the Calder Bookshop and Theatre.
The business was founded by the publisher John Calder who brought us the likes of Samuel Beckett, Marguerite Duras and Jorge Luis Borges over a career that spanned 50 years.

In 2010 it was taken over by an ensemble of actors and directors who gave it a more overtly political slant. The shop stocks both new and second hand books, specialising in plays, politics and philosophy along with many other treasures.

Besides their own theatre productions they put on classic film screenings, live jazz sessions and host book launches in the beautifully intimate theatre located at the back of the bookshop. It is a must-visit place on the south side of the Thames. The venue which many speak of as the beating heart of Waterloo s cultural community also rents out rehearsal space both in their basement (which also houses a top notch blue Sauter piano) and their theatre space, both ata very affordable rate – check them out.
