It is December 1938, the Spanish Civil War is still raging. Benedick and Claudio, members of the Italian Volunteer Force aiding General Franco, return home to Messina to spend their Christmas leave with Signora Leonata and her family. Waiting for them are Beatrice and Hero. A marriage is swiftly arranged. A merry war of wit commences between Benedick and Beatrice, but darkness soon enshrouds all concerned when a deadly plot is contrived by a sinister force.
