Royal Court Announces Autumn Season

ARTISTIC DIRECTOR DOMINIC COOKE ANNOUNCES THE ROYAL COURT THEATRE’S AUTUMN SEASON

• Autumn season will celebrate the Royal Court’s dedication to Internationalism
• Benedict Cumberbatch to lead casts of Rhinoceros and The Arsonists in repertoire
• Season of new International plays in the Jerwood Theatre Upstairs

The Royal Court Theatre’s Artistic Director, Dominic Cooke, today announced his Autumn season. Following the tremendous success of the New Writers season in the first half of 2007, the International Playwrights season will celebrate the Royal Court’s long tradition of International work – developing, nurturing and producing playwriting talent from across the globe.

“The Royal Court has always been an International theatre, and I intend to celebrate that with the very best drama, new and old, from around the world. Here at the Royal Court, we believe in developing playwriting talent from the grass roots. Each of the writers in the Jerwood Theatre Upstairs this season has had an ongoing relationship with the Royal Court’s International Department. The season is testament to the work we are constantly doing, around the world, to discover new voices, and to bring untold stories to the audience they deserve. These complement our shows in the Jerwood Theatre Downstairs, which plug back into the early Internationalist days of the Court, and a spirit of European iconoclasm.” – Dominic Cooke

At his first press conference as Artistic Director in February, Dominic Cooke committed to making Internationalism one of three core principles in the Royal Court’s output, the other two being an emphasis on new writers, and a spirit of experimentalism. The International Playwrights season sees him continue to deliver on that commitment.

The season will feature two revivals of major European classics, each of which received its European premiere at the Royal Court: Dominic Cooke will direct Eugène Ionesco’s Rhinoceros, in a new translation by Martin Crimp, and Royal Court Associate Director Ramin Gray will direct Max Frisch’s The Arsonists, in a new translation by Alistair Beaton. The two productions will play in repertoire in the Jerwood Theatre Downstairs, with the same casts, led by Benedict Cumberbatch. Rhinoceros is supported by Coutts & Co.

Running alongside these two classic parables will be a season of five new plays in the Jerwood Theatre Upstairs, by writers from Germany, Romania, India, Sweden and Ukraine.

These plays will be The Ugly One by Marius von Mayenburg (Germany), Kebab by Gianina Carbunariu (Romania), Free Outgoing by Anupama Chandrasekhar (India), The Good Family by Joakim Pirinen (Sweden) and The Khomenko Family Chronicle by Natalia Vorozhbit (Ukraine).

Under Associate Director Elyse Dodgson, the Royal Court’s International Department continues to lead the field in the development and production of new plays from around the world. With support from John Studzinski since 1997 and continued support from the Genesis Foundation since 2000, the department has worked in over 20 countries, and has produced over 15 plays in full productions as well as countless readings and events representing over 30 different countries.
