MICHAEL ROSS talks to us about going underground at The Vaults with his new play Protect and Survive......

Michael Ross is a playwright whose work has been performed at the Arcola, Old Red Lion, Riverside Studios, Southwark Playhouse, Theatre 503 and on the Edinburgh Fringe. His new play Protect and Survive runs at the Vault Festival from 2-6 March 2016. He was shortlisted for the Liverpool Hope Playwriting Prize in 2015 for Happy To Help which has an upcoming run at the Park Theatre, 14th June- 9th July 2016.

What first attracted you to the theatre?
As a writer what drew me was the breadth and quality of writing for theatre and the opportunities it provides for dramatic writers to tell their own stories featuring their own characters in their own voices. Any 'magic of theatre' talk tends to make me retch, but then I must admit there is a romantic appeal to the whole camaraderie of everyone pulling together to create something which happens live, and I love being in the rehearsal room with actors. Writing is so solitary otherwise.

What is your opinion of Off West End theatre, in general?
The most interesting and rewarding theatre is happening Off West End. Theatre 503 is right on my doorstep and that does some of the best new writing around, plays like Rotterdam, I And The Village, And Then Come the Nightjars and Valhalla. And then you've got places like the Park, the Bush and the Arcola which not only do great work but they're also really lovely, welcoming places to hang out at.

What was the most inspiring performance you have ever seen? Why?
Tough one, but either The Pillowman at the NT or Enron at the Royal Court. They were both brilliant scripts but also visually dazzling. They just had everything that good theatre should have; lots of imagination and intelligence, plus sheer entertainment value.

What makes a really good character?
Contradictions of some kind. A gap between what they profess and who they really are. That's always when you perk up as an audience, (or as a writer)- when somebody doesn't do the thing you most expect them to do.

Are there any actors/actresses you would like to write a play for?
There's loads. Michael Gambon, Miranda Richardson, Ben Whishaw, Roger Allam.

What play do you wish you’d written?
I was aghast when James Graham's The Angry Brigade opened as I'd wanted to write a play about that subject since reading Stuart Christie's memoir Granny Made Me An Anarchist a few years ago, but James Graham did such a good job and told the story in a really inspired way and I don't think I'd have come up with anything as good.

Why did you write Protect and Survive?
Last year I visited an amazing Cold War-era secret nuclear bunker in Kelvedon Hatch, Essex, and thought it would make the perfect setting for a play. I was talking about it with a director friend, Andrew Pritchard, and it turned out he'd once shot a film there and was equally fascinated by the place so he was very interested in directing the play should I write it, so that spurred me on to do it and Andrew was very encouraging about early drafts. I've written so many plays that have gone nowhere and never been staged, so nowadays I find I really need that encouragement, I need someone to say 'if you write this play, it will definitely happen' as its so dispiriting otherwise to write a play which never gets performed then what's the point?

Why did you think it would be relevant now?
Because nuclear weapons haven't gone away- in fact they're proliferated- and we're far too complacent about them. Back in 1984 (when the play is set) there were real fears of a nuclear exchange happening and there was organised opposition to it (such as at Greenham Common) but nowadays any politician who advocates disarmament is regarded as a loon, or else accused of banging on about something that isn't important to most voters- because of course ensuring the survival of humanity is way down the list of priorities compared with tackling immigration or our membership of the EU.

What do you want the audience to feel?
Amusement, intrigue, lust, surprise, dread, terror and despair- and roughly in that order.

What are The Vaults like as a performance space?
Really atmospheric and full of character and history. It's such an unusual venue so I think it suits unusual stories, and of course being subterranean it's perfect for this play.

Can you tell our readers about what you’re doing next?
My play Happy To Help opens at the Park Theatre in June. It's a comedy set in the branch of a fictional supermarket chain and its about how powerful those corporations are and how work increasingly governs our lives, but it's also about all the other stuff that happens when you're at work, like falling in love with colleagues or that constant nagging feeling that you're frittering you're life away doing something you hate. It'll be the first four-week run of a full length play of mine, so its both exciting and terrifying. You can buy tickets already, so please do book and come along.
