About: British Music Hall Society 50th Anniversary Weekend

These three days will offer a total of 24 sensational hours of music hall and variety entertainment, talks, interviews, stalls and exhibitions at hourly intervals. Access to the talks, entertainment and exhibitions will be with a ticket only, whilst the traders and front of house areas will be open throughout each day to the general public.


The festival programme will also include the first public viewing in almost a century of the lost comedy short Dessert at Dan Leno's House, starring music hall star Dan Leno who is regarded as the greatest comedian of the Victorian music hall. The film has been recovered from a set of loose Mutoscope cards collected by former BBC radio presenter, writer and raconteur, John Henty.


A music hall and variety exhibition will also featuring including original costumes worn by greats such as Max Miller, George Robey, Vesta Tilley and Bud Flanagan. Alongside personal items including Little Tich’s boots, Florrie Forde’s make up box and an engraved tray belonging to Marie Lloyd.

A collection of rare memorabilia celebrating the remarkable career of Ken Dodd OBE, collected by Geoff and Glenis Quible will be on display. As will a gallery of original posters by collector Nick Charlesworth featuring the Wood Green Empire, Chelsea Palace, London Palladium, Finsbury Park Empire, Collins Music Hall, Hackney Empire and The Metropolitan.

The programme includes a lunchtime presentation of over 300 music hall and variety posters and images curated by Carl Kirk of the University of Northampton. The collection has been collated from the British Music Hall Society, David Drummond Pantomime Collection, Roy Hudd Music Hall Archive Project at New Suffolk College and the Theatre's Trust.
