The Union Chapel, Islington on Tuesday 29th October, 7.00pm

Gregory Motton, the enigmatic Royal Court playwright, has reappeared in the guise of Dracula. The dialogue is compelling, while the original music and songs express the characters’ private thoughts. The result is disturbing. This musical is honestly terrifying. If you dare to allow Dracula himself to croon and crawl into your imagination just before Halloween, this is the show to see.

Motton’s work is widely acclaimed. His plays have been performed in Britain and Europe, including at the Royal Court and Comédie Française. He is also known as a translator of Strindberg. Beryl Bainbridge has described him as “Pinter in reverse, Orton accelerated and TS Eliot brought up to date” (comment on Plays Three, 1999). His work has been almost unseen on the British stage since The World’s Biggest Diamond (2005) received a five star review at the Royal Court.

Motton is co-directing this show with Gary Merry. This is a rare opportunity to see a new work by one of Britain’s great contemporary playwrights, directed by the writer himself. The script of this show re-produces the novel faithfully and in full including the often ignored second half. Motton captures the horrifying atmosphere of the original. And his dialogue is uncannily perceptive.

The lyrics of the songs provide a medium for Motton’s poetic brilliance. They dwell on the revolt against Death, against God. They are both beautiful and disturbing as they make us imagine the feelings of the vampires and their prey.

The music is more contemporary than you might expect from a musical. The genre is hard to place: like a Rolling Stones version of Les Miserables. The melodies are mournful and strange. They express the pain and longing of the characters, and they haunt you.

The show will be performed in the Union Chapel, Islington. The Gothic surroundings will provide no escape for your mind from the terrible tale of Dracula. Dracula condemns God as being the “Inventor of Death”. He lures others to revolt against God. If you want to see the fiend in action, don’t miss this show! (As long as you can live with the nightmares it will certainly give you.)
