“utterly convincing portraits of love” (Broadway World)
“a masterclass on the art of the monologue” (Beige)
How well do you know those who are closest to you? This critically acclaimed production transfers from the King’s Head in Islington to the OSO Arts Centre in Barnes on 17 September.

In powerful and moving monologues, the lives of three very different Californians are laid bare. In Los Feliz, life for a salesman in a diner (Robin Holden) changes when he meets the woman of his dreams on a Los Angeles side street. In Ben and Joe’s, featuring John Vernon, a group of older men spend their days in a San Fernando Valley bar shooting the breeze, watching TV and flirting with the bartender. Life is quiet until a young man enters. In Sunset, at the end of the day in the Cascade Mountains a grandmother (Carolyn Lyster) remembers her first date, the man she married and their life together.

All three actors have impressive resumes. Robin Holden was nominated for Best Actor at the 2011 Off West End Awards for Dr Jekyll/Mr Hyde in The Scandalous Case of Dr Jekyll & Mr Hyde. He has played the title role in Hamlet and Macbeth, Marc Antony in Julius Caesar, Iago in Othello and many contemporary roles. On stage John Vernon has appeared in Macbeth Hamlet, The Bald Prima-Donna, Blood and Ice amongst many others; his television work includes Call the Midwife, East Enders and The Bill; he is also well-known as a voiceover artist. Carolyn Lyster’s theatre credits include several West End appearances in Ray Cooney farces, as well as extensive television work, from Crossroads to Doctors.

Martin Foreman is the author of two novels (Weekend and The Butterfly's Wing), two short story collections and a full-length play (The Benefactor). In 2012 he won the Solo Festival New Writing Award for two of the plays which appear in Californian Lives. Director Emma King-Farlow is the founder and Artistic Director of Shadow Road Productions. Her credits include the chillers Sorry, Wrong Number and The Hitch-Hiker, the comedy Oswald's Return, the children's classic The Voyage of the Dawn Treader and Jean Anouilh's Antigone.
