About: The Union of Shorts - The Best of the Bunch!

The Union Theatre, London SE1 0LX
5 Dec 2007 – 12 Jan 2008

Every Christmas the Union Theatre commissions a series of new short plays for their annual Union of Shorts.

To celebrate a decade of the Union Theatre being open, the team have brought back and re-staged five of their favourite shorts with actors, directors and crew from the last 10 years and some new faces too.

In this season of all things panto – it’s a chance for adults of all ages to leave the kids at home and come and celebrate the Unions tenth birthday in an evening of pure comedy.

The evening of short plays includes….

by Michael Holland
Directed by Ian Groombridge
Jimmy’s just realised that Internet dating and lying about your looks do not mix – He’s in trouble and Olga’s on her way over! “You’re not 28, you don’t look 28 and you’re never gonna be 28 again” “I know, but I’ve told her I’m 28”

Gatekeepers True Religion
by Mike Pearcy
Directed by Tarek Iskander
A keen young priest arrives in Chernobyl to comfort the Gatekeeper, but the tables turn when he gets more than he bargained for.
“Get me a drink, quickly…not water man, vodka”

Horst Bucholz and Other Stories
by Matthew Wilkie
Directed by Gabby Vautier
At the pub quiz, George is fed up of being beaten each week by the Flying Underpants, so tonight he forces his team to raise their game by placing an impossible bet.
“It’s like being asked who played Moses in the Ten Commandments and putting down Charlton Athletic, you might have half of it right but it’s completely wrong”

by Jacqui Somerville
Performed by Victoria Jeffrey
Hannah discusses the trials and tribulations of modern dating.
“Where are you Mr Right? I’ve had a couple of Mr Wrongs, couple of Mr Letdowns plus a rather irritating Mr Halitosis”

Indigenous Peoples
by Andrew Biss
Directed by Elgiva Field
City couple Roger and Caroline seem a little out of place on their camping date which goes from bad to bonkers
“One could get quite glum, couldn’t one, if one pondered on it long enough.”

Some quotes for the plays when they were premiered at The Union.

“The Gatekeepers True Religion is a quirky, thoroughly unique gem”
Time Out

“Andrew Biss proves that simplicity can be far more engaging with ‘Indigenous Peoples’…Biss’ writing is warm and funny”

"The pub quiz takes a satirical bashing"
Indie London

"Lovingly recreates the drama of pub quiz nights ... Wilkie's decision to innovate in terms of dramatic form is particularly welcome."
