About: Wartime Women: The Khaki Cabaret

Prior to the release of the widely anticipated British drama film, Suffragettes, Fiona-Jane Weston joins fellow actors Helen Bonman Carter and Meryl Streep in celebrating the legacy of women who paved the way for today’s modern woman. To mark the centenary of the First World War, critically acclaimed actress/singer/storyteller Fiona-Jane presents Wartime Women: the Khaki Cabaret on 2nd July 2014.

In Wartime Women: The Khaki Cabaret, an affectionate tribute, with song, verse and personal accounts, Fiona-Jane plays homage to the courageous women of wartime Britain.
In recognition of the women who fought for both country and women’s rights, Fiona-Jane brings to life the stories of Suffragettes and other heroines in a two-part one woman show.

For the first time, 'ordinary' women became pilots, mechanics and engineers. They made munitions, worked the land and performed daring acts of espionage behind enemy lines. Things would never be the same again! Often moving and frequently funny, the celebrated mistress of dramatic cabaret, Fiona-Jane Weston will re-create the excitement of times that changed our world forever.

The two-part show opens with a royal welcome from Queen Elizabeth 1st, and then follows roughly in chronological order through to the World Wars. With help from Jane Austen, Vera Brittain, WW1 women poets, women Spitfire pilots, John Betjeman and many others, Fiona-Jane explores the extraordinary lives of ‘ordinary’ women. With musical direction by Jennifer Cook, songs include ‘Marieke’ (Jacques Brell), ‘The Girls with Bright Yellow Hands’ (David Stevenson), Arthur Schwarz’s comic ‘They’re Either Too Young or Too Old’ and ‘Keep the Home Fires Burning’ (Ivor Novello).

In addition to its London premier, Wartime Women: the Khaki Cabaret will also be staged at the atmospheric WW1 soldiers’ retreat house, Talbot House, near Ypres in Belgium on September 13th. The show will then return to the UK for a national tour at the end of the year.
