About: The Ballad of Reading Gaol

Performed by Gerard Logan (Olivier nominee and winner of The Stage’s “Best Actor” at the 2011 Edinburgh Festival), 'The Ballad of Reading Gaol' is a poem written by Wilde after his release from Reading gaol where he served two years’ hard labour having been convicted of homosexual offences in 1895.

Gareth Armstrong dramatised and directs the poem which narrates the execution of Charles Thomas Wooldridge, who was convicted of murdering his wife, moving from an objective story-telling to Wilde’s juxtaposition of the executed man with himself.

Part of St. James Theatre's Wilde Week, celebrating the life and work of Oscar Wilde, 'The Ballad of Reading Gaol' is one of three new productions which dramatically recount Wilde’s swift and painful fall from grace and subsequent imprisonment in 1895.
