Hedda Gabler
On from 27 Feb 2008 till 01 Mar 2008
by Schaubühne am Lehniner Platz, Berlin
Genre(s): Drama, Classic

About: Hedda Gabler

This audacious production brings Ibsen's drama into a contemporary German city.

As rain pours down outside a sleek, modern apartment, the tense relationship between newlyweds Hedda and Tesman periodically erupts in bursts of violence that shatter the suburban calm. Hedda's frustration and isolation manifests itself in a calculated and chilling manipulation of those around her, with ultimately destructive consequences.

Thomas Ostermeier is one of Germany's leading directors of contemporary theatre. He has been Artistic Director of the prestigious Schaubühne am Lehniner Platz since 1999.

Ostermeier and his team take a political and collaborative approach to theatre, focusing on social realism. Their approach has a natural affinity with the work of Norwegian playwright Henrik Ibsen, which was considered shocking in the 19th century because of the challenge it posed to Victorian moral values.
