Instructions for Modern Living
On from 01 Apr 2008 till 05 Apr 2008
by Duncan Sarkies and Nic McGowan
Genre(s): New Writing, Musical

About: Instructions for Modern Living

This comic-tragic multimedia collage is a time capsule of urban life in the small hours of the night. Music, dialogue, and huge video images of nocturnal surveillance footage create an eerie, hypnotic atmosphere, setting the scene for some captivating tales of people who find it hard to sleep.

Behind closed doors we eavesdrop on ordinary characters at the edge of sanity: a radio talkback announcer with no callers, a ghost who refuses to leave its former bedroom, a man about to bet his life savings on a horse, an astronaut suffering anxiety attacks in space, and a fast-food franchise owner who is sleeping with his employee of the month.

Duncan Sarkies is best known for writing Scarfies, one of New Zealandís most successful recent films. He has worked extensively as a playwright, winning the Bruce Mason Award in 1995. His first play Lovepuke has been performed in twelve countries and his second play, Saving Grace, was the New Zealand Play of the Year.

Nic McGowan is a sound designer and composer. A finalist nominee in the 2004 New Zealand Music Awards for Producer of the Year, his reputation for creative audio design also extends to theatre, radio drama, film and television.
