by Taher Najib
Genre(s): New Writing

About: In Spitting Distance

A penetrative look, laced with black humour, at life in the midst of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and the experience of being an Arabic traveller since the September 11 attacks on the World Trade Centre. Khalifa Natour delivers a virtuoso solo performance, describing the frustrating and farcical journey of a Palestinian actor holding an Israeli passport who tries to fly from Paris to Tel Aviv on the wrong day.

In Spitting Distance won first prize at the prestigious TheaterNetto Festival for one man shows in Tel Aviv, and has since been staged at Peter Brook’s Théâtre des Bouffes du Nord in Paris.

Taher Najib worked as an actor in Ramallah before fleeing to Paris. He later returned to work with director Ofira Henig on a theatre project in Tel Aviv. It was this journey that prompted him to begin writing In Spitting Distance.

Ofira Henig is one of the most significant contemporary Israeli directors. She was Artistic Director of the Khan Theatre in Jerusalem from 1996 to 2001, and is currently Artistic Director of Herzlia New Ensemble.

Acclaimed actor Khalifa Natour works internationally and also performs with the Palestinian National Theatre of East Jerusalem, and in Ramallah with Al Kasaba Theatre.
