Tabard Theatre
by Hew Rous-Eyre

Tickets: £10 - £12

Harry Shawcroft has it all figured out. He’s quit a career in law and moved to Kenya to try and make the world a better place, armed only with a Philosophy Degree and a Lonely Planet. However, working at an NGO trying to help refugees, Harry begins to suspect that the people he wants to save might have their own ideas.

Caught between Mr Banks, his burnt-out, morally questionable boss, and an eccentric group of refugees ranging from opportunistic smugglers to would-be Pulitzer Prize winners, it’s Harry first day in the office from hell.
This surreal comedy explores the struggles faced by refugees challenged by local hostility, xenophobia, and bureaucratically ineffective NGOs.

Hew Rous-Eyre, who wrote the script after months of research carried out while living in Nairobi, believes the play challenges how we think about refugees. “Despite the fact that some of these people have lost their homes, families and countries, they are still thought of as ‘just’ refugees. Leftovers highlights how this is not the case.”

Up-and-coming director Max Elton will be at the helm of his first show since his hit production Big Brother Blitzkrieg at the Edinburgh Fringe in August 2014. “One of the script’s biggest achievements is that it succeeds in being very funny while still tackling the hopelessly frustrating realities faced by urban refugees.”
