Henry Naylor in association with Gilded Balloon presents The London Premiere of The Spirit of the Fringe Award 2015 Winner
ECHOES
by Fringe First Winner, Henry Naylor

Time: 8.00pm (Saturday matinee – 3.00pm)

Following a critically acclaimed season at this year’s Edinburgh Festival Fringe, Fringe First Award winning Playwright, Henry Naylor, is proud to present the London Premiere of his brand new play, Echoes, in which he finds surprising similarities between the Jihadi brides of today, and the early Victorian pioneers.

Presented as a pair of intercut monologues, Echoes tells the stories of two women, born 175 years apart.
One is a student Islamist from London – the other a Victorian colonialist.
Both women are idealists: intelligent adventurers, with strong religious beliefs. Both travel to the East to build Empires. But both see their ideals drowned in seas of blood...
Echoes is a provocative and brutal tale of colonialism, and the rhyme of history.

In 2014, he wrote his first straight play, The Collector, which explored the issue of prisoner abuses during the Western occupation of Iraq, and questioned how essentially decent people became brutalized by war. The play won the coveted Fringe First Award, and subsequently collected many four and five-star reviews during its run. The Collector went on to play a sell-out season at the Arcola Theatre, London.

“NAYLOR AND TWO BEAUTIFULLY NUANCED PERFORMANCES GIVE EQUAL EMOTIONAL WEIGHT TO TWO DISPARATE VICTIMS OF RELIGIOUS COLONIALISM IN THIS HUGELY IMPRESSIVE PLAY” ****
Mark Lawson, Guardian

“HENRY NAYLOR WRITES WITH CLARITY AND BLACK HUMOUR IN TERRIBLE CIRCUMSTANCES, MAKING THE POINT THAT THE FOUNDATION OF WESTERN SOCIETY IS ITSELF STEEPED IN THE PATRIARCHAL BARBARISM WE NOW RIGHTLY DECRY”
****Scotsman

“NOT ONLY DOES HE (NAYLOR) MAKE THESE JOURNEYS RICH IN DETAIL, HE LEAVENS HIS POINTEDNESS WITH IMPRESSIVE QUANTITIES OF WIT. CRUCIALLY, THE PERFORMANCES ARE RESTRAINED, COMMITTED, AFFECTINGLY INTIMATE”
