The Masks of Aphra Behn

Written and Performed by Claire Louise Amias
Directed by Pradeep Jey

6 Fredericks Place London EC2R 8AB

The Masks of Aphra Behn tells the story of a unique personality Ė the first professional female writer who, as well as being one of the most prolific playwrights of the Restoration period, also doubled as a spy for King Charles II in the Dutch Wars.

A group of theatregoers, getting ready for a performance of Behnís most successful play,The Rover , are in for a surprise Ė one of the actresses is indisposed and the show has to be cancelled. Instead, for one night only, Aphra Behn herself will tell them the extraordinary story of her time as a spy in the West Indies and later in Antwerp.

Complete with excerpts from Behnís letters, prefaces, poetry and plays, this new one-woman show throws light on a fascinating writer of whom Virginia Woolf said, ďAll women together ought to let flowers fall upon the grave of Aphra Behn ... for it was she who earned them the right to speak their minds.
