About: Jazz Verse Jukebox

Fridays 2nd Dec / 27th Jan / 24th Feb / 24th March | 19:30

The eclectic JAZZ VERSE JUKEBOX returns to Hoxton Hall for its final show of 2016.

Described as “the perfect jazz poetry party” (Michael Horovitz), the JAZZ VERSE JUKEBOX continues the age-old tradition of intertwining jazz improvisation and spoken word. Join us for what promises to be a thrilling night of diverse spoken word & jazz from some of the freshest exponents on the scene.

The Jazz Verse Jukebox on Friday 2nd December features:

Poet CHRYS SALT MBE: “Chrys Salt’s poems, not least the familial ones, have a wonderful vitality, warmth and immediacy, those threaded with elegy imbued with humour as well as humanity.” Stewart Conn (first Edinburgh Laureate)

The first young people’s poet laureate for London 2016 CALEB FEMI – “A bright and passionate poet” London Magazine

The Roundhouse Poetry Slam (2011) winner ZIA AHMED – “This poet is an original. He does a wonderful dervish dance with language.” – Imtiaz Dharker

Glastonbury Festival official website poet in residence (2015) PETE THE TEMP – “There is such a hard-won elegance to Bearder’s poetry. …he finds a way of bringing experience to new life through linguistic innovation, finding the joy in the everyday…” Luke Kennard

With music from RANJANA GHATAK – “Ghatak’s mesmeric melodies also take centre stage at times. Her milky tones wash off over in waves like a lubricated lullaby, gently lulling you into a state of semi-hypnosis..” The Upcoming

And music from your host JUMOKÉ FASHOLA – “…an essential vision of great songs from one of the ever-moving cultural frontiers of jazz.’

With live accompaniment from the Jazz Verse Jukebox Trio. Plus our unique ‘jukebox’ OPEN MIC, allowing the audience to showcase their skills of jazz or performance poetry.
