About: Lord Dimiss Us

Lord Dismiss Us, a Boys of the Empire Production at Above The Stag Theatre

Glenn Chandler, the creator of the hit TV series Taggart, brings to the stage the first adaptation of Michael Campbell’s tragi-comedy set in an English boys’ boarding school in 1967. Parliament is about to amend the law, making homosexuality legal over the age of 21. The play marks the 50th anniversary of this important milestone in LGBT history.

Weatherhill is a quintessential English boarding school. Fourteen masters are unmarried, senior prefect Terry Carleton is in love with fourth year junior Nicky Allen, the school chaplain has paintings of naked youths on his wall, and English master Eric Ashley fights his own good fight with his inner demons. All are still criminals in the eyes of the law. Cue the arrival of the severely homophobic new head Philip Crabtree, and his devoutly religious wife, who between them mount a campaign to stamp out ‘moral degeneracy’ among the boys. The result is a reign of terror which has hilarious – and tragic – consequences for everyone.

The play is timely. In an age when men are being thrown off rooftops in Chechnya for their sexuality, bigotry and prejudice are on the rise, and homophobic attacks are on the increase in this country, it’s important to look in the rear view mirror and see where we were half a century ago. Weatherhill School and the characters in Michael Campbell’s novel are a microcosm of what life was like when
homosexuality was a whispered word and the deed punishable by two years in prison. Not even Campbell could have anticipated the changes that have occurred since then. We have come a long way in those fifty years, but not far enough.

Time: Tuesday – Saturday 7.30pm (Sundays 6.00pm)

“Not just a fabulous theatrical romp…an important history lesson.”
