Barons Court Theatre
by Ernest Hemingway
Genre(s): Drama, Comedy, Classic

Tickets: £10 - £12

The American author, Ernest Hemingway, one of the greatest writers of the twentieth century, was born in 1898 in Illinois. The son of a doctor, he became a newspaper correspondent in Kansas City, but seeking material for his fiction, was desperate to experience war in Europe at first hand, and was wounded while serving as a volunteer ambulance man in Italy in World War One. He was much influenced, too, by Gertrude Stein who introduced him to bull-fighting. He wrote eleven novels, one of which, The Old Man and the Sea won him the Nobel Prize for Literature, and numerous short stories, many of which were written during his time abroad and in the theatre of war, especially in Italy, France, Spain, and in the '50s, Cuba where fishing became a passion. These experiences are reflected in all of his work. By focussing on six short stories, we aim to bring some of these themes to you, hopefully in a manner of which he would have approved, that is to say, by bringing the words to life.
