About: Why The Child Is Cooking In The Polenta

What does it mean to feel foreign?

A family of famous circus artists flee communist Romania for the promise of a better life in the West, knowing they canít ever return home.

As the youngest daughter tries to adjust to her new life in Switzerland, it becomes clear that she must go to extreme lengths to provide for her family.

Romanian artist Edith Alibec brings her multi award-winning one-woman show to the Gate Theatre based on the influential novel by Aglaja Veteranyi.

"A full house laughed and bitterly wept in front of this endearing and unique story."
Irina Cornisteanu,
Director Romanian Cultural Institute, Vienna

"Edith Alibec is a performer with tremendous range and emotional depth."
Penn Genthner,
Vineyard Theatre, New York

"Edith Alibec is an extraordinary acting phenomenon. I was moved to tears in the final scene."
Andrea Siering,
Spectator in Zurich
