About: Hedda

World Premiere
By Henrik Ibsen
Adapted by Lucy Kirkwood

Free-spirited Hedda Gabler i strapped in her marriage and weighed down by her questioning mind. Caught between her disturbed sense of propriety and a desire for revolution, something in the end, must give.

Carrie Cracknell will direct Hedda, Lucy Kirkwood’s sparkling new adaptation of Ibsen’s masterpiece in a version for the 21st Century.

Hedda exists in a world of endless choices, where each person strives to create their own life-narrative. Yet Hedda seems unable to create any meaningful purpose for her own existence.

Hedda, still mourning for the father she adored, returns from a six-month honeymoon with a man that she no longer loves. The only way she can find passion and excitement is through the wilful damage of others. Trapped, dangerous and caught between the three men in her life; something in the end must give.

Playwright Lucy Kirkwood finished her English literature degree at the University of Edinburgh in 2007. Her writing credits include most recently Tinderbox at the Bush Theatre and Skins for E4. Lucy’s other credits include Grady Hot Potato and Guns or Butter at the Union Theatre.

Carrie Cracknell is joint artistic director of the Gate Theatre alongside Natalie Abrahami. Her directing credits for the Gate include: I am Falling, The Sexual Neuroses of our Parents and Armaggedon. Other credits include: Stacy (Tron) A Mobile Thriller (Traverse and National Tour), Death and the City (Tron), The Hush (BAC and The Ohio Theatre New York).
