About: Simples of the Moon

First produced in 1990 at The Chichester Festival Theatre and The Lyric Theatre Hammersmith, ‘Simples of The Moon’ tells the tragic story of the life of James Joyces’ daughter Lucia, who spent her last 30 years incarcerated in St Andrews long term Psychiatric Institution in Northampton. We see Lucia at the end of her life, looking back at her young vibrant self.. and struggling to come to terms with her turbulent past. The play is a passionate and poetic piece of theatre which, when it was first produced, it attained outstanding reviews. This play-reading is being presented as a special performance on the eve of BLOOMSDAY.

In ‘Simples Of The Moon’ Rosalind Scanlon delicately and skillfully conveys the anguish that engulfed Lucia and her family and sent Samuel Beckett scurrying away from her deadly embrace. David Nathan (Jewish Chronicle.)

‘Simples of The Moon’ is a powerful play with a distressing and disturbing subject, but the wretchedness of madness is often offset by humorous and touching scenes’ Martin Doyle ( Former Editor Irish Post)

‘A fascinating and passionate play about mentall illness, rich in biographical detail and metaphorical allusion’. Michael Arditti (Evening Standard)
