About: Crystal Clear

"YOU CAN'T SEE ME. YOU'RE NOT SEEING ME. ALL YOU'RE SEEING IS MY BLINDNESS."

Richard – a young man with diabetes – is struggling. As his health and relationship with long-term partner Jane deteriorate, he looks for comfort in the calming company of Thomasina, a poised and enigmatic blind woman. When Richard abruptly loses his own sight, however, his intense but ill-fated connection with the serene Thomasina takes a tragic turn, and the two must confront the question of how their love survives in a world made for the sighted.

Crystal Clear is a raw and humbling examination of sudden loss and our attempts to cope with it. It tells a story of love undone by fear and self-destruction, and exposes our fundamental need for human connection.

Devised by Phil Young, the play first premiered at The Old Red Lion in 1982 before transferring to the Wyndham's Theatre in 1983. Returning to the Old Red Lion 37 years later, White Deer Theatre present a revival in which all performances have been made accessible for visually impaired audience members.

Reviews

Praise for the original production of ‘Crystal Clear’ (1982/1983):

“Undoubtedly the most moving play in London, [...] and one of the most intelligent.” The Sunday Times

“Universally applicable bleakness: a picture of love trying to shut out the dark.” The Observer

“A fierce punch to the solar plexus” The New York Times

“So passionate and so involving, it caught me by the throat” The Telegraph

Praise for the current production:

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

“Gareth Kennerley’s performance as the tortured Richard was first-rate and there were moments – such as his attempted humour in the face of adversity (so British) – when I really loved him […] it’s obvious how amazing all three actors were” LondonTheatre1

"This is a thought-provoking and deeply moving piece of theatre that entertains and enlightens, staying with you long after the house lights come up" Broadway World UK

"White Deer have mounted something that big theatres and regularly funded organizations don’t even try and attempt" Exeunt Magazine

"Crystal Clear is an intensely moving piece. […] Gareth Kennerley, Rakhee Sharma as Jane and Gillian Dean as Thom deliver outstanding performances." British Theatre Guide

“This genuinely moving play has pulled out all the stops and is a worthy celebration of Old Red Lion’s 40 years of small scale big hitting theatre.” London Pub Theatres
