About: Pictland

Two years of famine in Pictland. Mysterious carvings are appearing in stone. Bosh and Vis have been taking it in turns to watch the field, but nothing’s growing. Mo is trying to hold things together. Shan and Tak arrive with a plan of action: to leave their home and make the journey south, in search for food, shelter and allies. But if they leave as a group, what will make them their own community? Through witty and philosophical discussion, democracy is put to the test to establish the conditions of the group. But what really needs to be sacrificed in order to build a nation? And does anyone really like baths? Like, really like them?? Let’s do a vote.

A political comedy which deconstructs democracy and attempts to get to the heart of what makes us, an “us”. Pictland was first developed as part of the London Student Drama Festival at the Arcola Theatre in 2019. It was then developed and revived at Watford Palace Theatre for the Watford Fringe Festival later in the year where it received positive reviews and feedback.

PackPack is a young theatre collective with an interest in notions of “community”. It is led by theatre-maker Joseph Winer who developed Pictland with playwright Eilis Price as its first project. It is particularly interested in collaborating with LGBTQ+ creatives.
