About: The Underpants

In 1910 when a glimpse of stocking was something shocking two very different men face cardiac arrest when they are witness to the full descent of the luscious Louise's lingerie. Here begins Carl Sternheim's play and from here we follow as they are drawn irresistibly into her life. In this "laugh out loud" (New York Times) adaptation by the comedian Steve Martin we are witness to the issues of fleeting fame, sexual politics and social comment all sheathed in "A hilarious, over the top farce" (New York Daily News)

Carl Sternheim was one of the most produced playwrights of the early 20th C and saw it as his mission to expose society's ills and the role of the individual. Bertolt Brecht described him as the "greatest comic writer of our age"

Steve Martin is probably best known for his film work: Roxanne, Father of the Bride, Parenthood, The Jerk, The Three Amigos and the much maligned The Return of The Pink Panther! Less well known to many is his writing. From screenplays including, Roxanne, L.A. Story and A Simple Twist of Fate to his play 'Picasso at the Lapin' which has won numerous theatre awards.

Chancy Productions has, over the last ten years, been one of the most successful production companies working off the 'West End'.

'Bedding Clay Jones' (Scotsman*****. Daily Mail**** The List *****) and 'Sexing Alan Titchmarsh' (Scotsman****, Ind.****) both won Fringe Firsts in Edinburgh. 'Being There with Peter Sellers' (Written and performed by Richard Braine and directed by David Grindley), began in Edinburgh, transferred to London and then toured nationally.

Chancy productions are very proud and excited to be presenting the British and European premiere of The Underpants, which The Boston Herald described as: 'terribly elegant, terribly cool, terribly sexy and very, very funny.
