About: Islington Dance Festival 19 June to 8 July

The Festival is an initiative of Culture Device (www.culturedevice.com) in collaboration with Holloway Arts Festival and The Rowan Arts Project, and will also provide workshops for children and adults right up to the ‘golden age’, including those with disabilities.

The programme opens with a free public performance on Friday 19 June from 12 noon till 4:00pm at the Angel shopping centre to showcase the variety of dance on offer across the Festival. The climax of the Festival will be performances by Elena Giannotti: One girl B.A.N.D. (6 July) followed by The Dancers – Angie Smalis (Ire), Janyce Michellod (Fr) and Daniel Vais (UK/Isr) himself (7 July). Other performances include Planet Egypt, Dance Young (a show case of Islington City Dance Academy) Gold Dance (for the over 60s), and a film screening of Dancing Alfonso directed by Barak Haymann.

Self-taught artist and director, Daniel Vais was born in Israel and is now based in London. As well as studying choreography and a variety of dance techniques, Daniel creates choreographic events and installations, focusing on social dynamics, manipulation and transformation of space. He has been inspired by the talent, tenacity, individuality and humour of students with apparently special needs, and one of his aims is to overturn, through dance, the basic assumptions of the limitations of the intellectually disabled. One of the central precepts of the Islington Dance Festival is to further this work and push awareness of the capabilities of these often-ignored people further into the mainstream population.

The Festival is supported by Islington Council, Holloway Arts Festival, Rowan Arts Project and Culture Device.

Editor’s Notes:

w Elena Giannotti – (Ireland/Italy)

Solo performance from award-winning dancer Elena Giannotti presents an evening of dance improvisation, in the form of short solos that draw the audience into a shared moment of intimacy. Suspended by a delicate thread of emotions, the solos unfold between the narrative and the abstract, tracing a free flow of physical obsessions and nomadic dreams.

Italian born Elena Giannotti is currently based in Ireland and has worked for L’Ensemble Dance-Theatre Company, Virgilio Sieni Dance Company and Yoshiko Chuma amongst others. She has collaborated with British choreographer Rosemary Butcher, dancing in performances such as Episodes of Flight, Woman & Memory and White and films such as Vanishing Point and 4Dance for Channel 4. She also teaches.

Date: Monday 6 July 8:00pm Venue: The Union Chapel Tickets: £15.00

www.unionchapel.org.uk Tel: 020 7226 1686

w The Dancers – (UK, Ireland, France, Greece, Germany)

Using a combination of primal and modern movement, the evening consists of solos by the individual dancers revealing the notion of the Dancer’s role as an artist through the unique dancing body.

Angie Smalis (Ire) will present “the lightly fragranced solo” a unique journey progressing at different rates, every stage having something to offer; Angie was born and raised in Athens, Greece. She studied dance and choreography in Athens and worked as a dancer before she moved to Vienna. Angie relocated to Limerick in 2003 where she is currently artistic director of Limerick Youth Theatre and also an independent dance artist. Angie Smalis is supported by Culture Ireland

Janyce Michellod (Fr) will present “imbibe”. A journey to re-discover what has been felt and to revive physical memories; a moment to refine the moving body in the instant of poetry. In “imbibe” the dancer invites the imagination to slide into the surrounding reality, therefore bringing down its walls and freeing oneself from judgement and censorship. Travelling through her fantasies by association of ideas, the dancer enters a world of memories.

Daniel Vais (UK/Isr) will present Moon Dance, a dance ritual choreographed especially for this evening. Autodidact dancer, choreographer and creative director, Daniel’s work is a combination of post-modern and ancient dance forms. Daniel is the founder of Soul Dance, a dance form which focuses on the higher self of the dancing body. He is the choreographer of The Love Spotters, working with artists with special needs and professional dancers, he presents choreographic works, installations, dance rituals and he teaches internationally.
