About: The Jewish Wife

Frankfurt, 1935. As a fascist government takes control, a woman plans her escape.

This year’s JMK award-winner takes a fresh look at a work of personal tragedy and national travesty. A woman abandons her home, friends and family in an intimate moment played out across 1930s Germany. Immersing the audience in a landscape of domesticity and fear throughout the building, director Matthew Evans presents epic theatre on a small scale.

The JMK Trust was founded to give practical learning opportunities to young theatre directors in memory of James Menzies-Kitchin; a theatre director of thrilling promise. The JMK Award allows one talented director a year to stage their own production of a classic text.

'The winners and runners up [of the JMK Award] make a starry list' Time Out

The JMK Trust is kindly supported by the Jerwood Charitable Foundation, Arts Council England, BAC and the Ian Ritchie Foundation.
