Theatre503 and Strike Ensemble are proud to announce their co-production on Ship of Fools.

Two journeys, two sets of travellers, five hundred years apart.

1492.Basel. In a flash of inspiration the town council summons the city's 'fools'. Outcasts, handicapped, homosexuals and subversives are herded onto a ship with neither sail nor oar and floated down the Rhine into permanent exile.

2007. Britain. In a populist initiative, the government selects a group of long-term unemployed, bundles them onto a bus and drives them deep into the unknown to work for their dole.

Theatre503 and Strike Ensemble present a riotous and compelling exploration of how society deals with its outsiders by internationally acclaimed Australian writer Andrew Bovell.

Following the success of Photo Story (BAC 2004, awarded the Pick Of The Fringe by Fest) and Love Remains (Edinburgh 2006), Strike Ensemble once again units a group of talented young artists to produce visually compelling and skilfully executed theatre.

Andrew Bovell is an internationally acclaimed writer for both stage and screen. His plays have won numerous awards including the Victoria Green Room, State Premiers Awards and the highly praised peer-judged AWGIE award. His co-authorship of Strictly Ballroom , alongside Baz Lruman, put him firmly on the map of cinema and his recent film Lantana was critically acclaimed internationally, winning Best Screenplay at the 2003 London Critics Circle Film Awards.

Toby Frow has directed extensively both in London and across the UK. Recently featured in Time Out as 'Theatre's bright young thing', Toby spent one year as Resident Assistant Director at the Donmar Warehouse. There he worked alongside Richard Eyre, Michael Grandage, Phillip Seymour Hoffman and John Crowley. Recent directing credits include The Pillowman (National Theatre, Tour UK/Ireland), Beautiful Thing (Sound Theatre, London, nominated for the Best Off-West End production by Whatsonstage Awards) and Shaw Triple Bill (Orange Tree Theatre).
