About: ELEPHANT 21

Wednesday 14 July – Saturday 24 July 2010
Unit 215, Elephant & Castle Shopping Centre
The Mayhem Company

Elephant 21 is a new theatre production taking place in Unit 215 of The Elephant & Castle Shopping Centre, currently the home of the Royal Court’s Theatre Local Season. The show, running from Wednesday 14 July to Saturday 24 July, aims to capture the vibrancy and diversity of 21st century Elephant & Castle and its community shortly before extensive redevelopment of the area is due to take place.

The Mayhem Company (TMC), the theatre group behind Elephant 21, initially trained a group of people from the area to act as oral historians who then went into the local community and interviewed a broad range of people who have lived and loved in Elephant & Castle. These collected stories have inspired the play Elephant 21.

The plot of Elephant 21 weaves through the past one hundred years told through four generations of the Valentine family in a play about war, Sarsparilla, Knickerbocker glories, more war, suicide, jiving and unrequited love.

The cast will be a mixture of young non-professionals from The Mayhem Company, professional actors, and older non-professionals from the local Blackfriars Settlement in Southwark. As the Elephant & Castle community is at the heart of the Elephant 21 project there will also be a number of dedicated performances for local schools, accompanied by workshops and complimentary education packs, as well as a number of free performances to engage people who otherwise wouldn’t engage with the arts.

The Mayhem Company works extensively with young people from south London, running theatre workshops and performances aimed at developing both practical performance skills as well as wider theatrical skills. One recent young participant said of TMC, “Mayhem is amazing, I love the opportunity we get as young adults to do what we love doing best: ‘Acting’. Mayhem is an important part of my life.”
