About: It's Clazzical!!

Two renowned musicians, virtuoso jazz clarinettist and saxophone ace JULIAN MARC STRINGLE, and the celebrated classical violinist SONIA SLANY are ‘fusing’ their groups, THE DREAM BAND and THE SOLID STRINGS, to kick-start the 2011 season of world-class jazz sessions in the bar/restaurant of the Chickenshed Theatre in Southgate to create ‘IT’S CLASSICAL’.

This fantastic evening of jazz magic on the 28th January will be a feast of blues, ballads, be-bop, funk and latin Jazz to produce a stunning, original sound designed to captivate lovers of both classical and contemporary jazz.

Violin soloist SONIA SLANY has worked with many pop and jazz artists including Mark Knopfler, Ryuichi Sakamoto and Peter Gabriel. She writes and performs her own music with her group, THE SOLID STRINGS. Her previous group Electra Strings were the resident quartet on LATER with Jools Holland. She has also recorded on many Hollywood soundtracks, most recently, "Shakespeare In Love", "Captain Corelli’s Mandolin", "Harry Potter", "Lord of the Rings", "Cold Mountain", "Thunderbirds" and "Troy".

Julian first tried out the IT’S CLASSICAL concept at one of the late Sir John Dankworth’s garden concerts . He performed Sir John’s beautiful LYRIC FANTASY to an ecstatic reception and decided to explore the funk/classic fusion further.

Swedish classical conductor arranger John Jansson came on board and wrote some stunning original compositions and arrangements for this exciting line-up of gifted players.

Classically trained and Enfield born Julian has spent his entire working life as a jazz musician. He first met Sonia when she married another renowned Enfield musician, Paul Clarvis. Paul is probably the most successful orchestral / jazz percussionist in the Country, and at 13 was a founder member of the acclaimed teenage jazz group that Julian formed at the Latymer School.

On 28 January performing the music of Bernstein, Dankworth, Gershwin, Jansoon, Jobim, Rimsky Korsakov and Stringle are jazz award winners:

Neil Angilley on keyboards/Dominic Ashworth on guitars/Mike Bradley on drums/Chris Dodd on bass/Jacqui Hicks on vocals / percussion/Julian Marc Stringle on clarinet and saxes/Sonia Slany, on first violin/Stuart Hall on violin/Steve Tees on viola/Nic Cooper on cello.
