PilotLIGHT Theatre presents The UK Premiere of
Visions of Kerouac
by Martin Duberman
directed by Robin Norton-Hale
16th February – 19th March 2011

The Half Moon Pub, Herne Hill, London

PilotLIGHT Theatre company presents Vision of Kerouac by US playwright Martin Duberman. A biographical play, Visions of Kerouac examines the life of prolific writer and counter-cultural icon, Jack Kerouac (On the road, 1957) and his self-named ‘Beat’ generation friends in 1950s-60s America.

Directed by Robin Norton-Hale, following her sell-out run of La Boheme at the Soho Theatre (‘One of the most ingenious stagings ever devised’ New York Times), the UK debut of Visions of Kerouac will be staged at The Half Moon Pub in Herne Hill, South London. Since 2009, PilotLIGHT has been transforming this unique venue into a new home for fringe theatre in the south of the city.

2011 will be a year of revival for Kerouac and the Beats, beginning with the National Theatre’s Angelheaded Hipsters exhibition, displaying photography from Beat poet Allen Ginsberg’s personal collection from the 22nd January.

The film version of On the Road from BAFTA award-winning director Walter Salles’ is due for release this year. Also on the billing, the documentary: William. S. Burroughs: A Man Within and Howl – a cinematic portrait of Allen Ginsberg, both of which previewed at the BFI London Film Festival in October 2010.

As Artistic Director of PilotLIGHT, Hannah Almond commented, “Kerouac and the Beat generation have influenced so many artists, from Bob Dylan to Kurt Cobain, who in turn have become cultural icons. In the same way, Duberman’s play struck a chord with me and I felt passionate to bring it to the UK stage. I hope audiences will be similarly inspired by PilotLIGHT’s contribution to the revival of Beat vision”.
