About: Two Gents Production Double Bill - Magetsi & Hamlet

Two Gentlemen Productions: Magetsi
Thu 2 Jun / 7.30pm / Venue 1 / £10, £8 student/concs

Now, in this self-written show, Two Gents present a postcard from Zimbabweans to their counterparts abroad; inspired by the experiences of an estimated 3 million Zimbabweans that now live abroad and their own encounter of returning home.

Democratic – a young man that goes back to Zimbabwe after ten years in England to bury his father, Trinity – a newly returned woman searching for a partner in Harare, Ambuya’s campaign for electricity and an eclectic revolving disc of characters and situations, provide a lens for the consideration of ‘Home’ and what it means to be a ‘diasporan’ in your own country.

This is it. This is Harare eclectic and electric. This is Magetsi.

Two Gentlemen Productions: Hamlet
Fri 3 Jun / 7.30pm / Venue 1 / £10, £8 student/concs

In the twilight of a pre-colonial Zimbabwe, a world of unyielding beliefs and ritual, where the afterlife and the present co-exist: two young men.

The first Hamlet, a tribal prince, confronts madness vs reason as he returns to find his father murdered, his mother incoherent and a new dangerous chief has taken over.

The other, Leartes, falls victim to the new ruler as he must revenge the death of his father and that of his sister who finds herself in the ultimate peril.

As the corpses mount, who buries who, and what danger is lurking in the wings of this small kingdom?

Two actors, two props and the convergence of two cultures are all it takes to create an urgent, poetic and spiritual re imagining of the rarely seen First Quarto of Shakespeare’s classic as the award winning Two Gents Productions! return.

This amusing, moving and wonderfully performed Hamlet establishes Two Gents as one of the productions to really watch, having now proved that their unique and accessible style translates to both comedy and tragedy, entertaining while drawing out powerful implications from Shakespeare. It's yet another reminder that even such an institutionalised play as this can, with some imagination and a disregard for tradition, truly become alive again.
