About: Enoch Arden in the Hope Shelter

The UK premier of a new Canadian hit! Based on Alfred Lord Tennyson's Enoch Arden and the Melodrama for Piano by Richard Strauss, Judith Thompson's biting prose creates a shocking, relevant vision of love and art in forgotten places.

"You speak through your music...and your music lets me speak"

Award-winning Canadian playwright Judith Thompson has crafted a modern, powerful vision of Strauss' beloved 1898 melodrama, Enoch Arden. Using poetry, music and prose, the play celebrates the potential for art to ignite and transform, even in the darkest of circumstances. Jabber, a sometimes homeless man, is trying to rescue his best friend, Ciel. Once a fine pianist, Ciel has shut herself off from the world after the death of her infant. Jabber uses Tennyson's poetry to reach his friend – and although she will not speak, Ciel begins to respond through Strauss' exquisite music.

"Enoch Arden is the perfect marriage between Thompson's poetic inner self and her tuned-in social and political conscience."
-The Globe and Mail
