About: Pandora's Boxes

by Denise O'Leary
directed by Dimitry Devdariani

Pandora has everything: a loving husband, beautiful child, and happy home. But when a mysterious “Real Life Box” arrives, her orderly world is turned upside down. Under the influence of the box, Pandora's moral compass wavers and motherly instincts vanish as she enters the murky world of television, advertising, and consumerism. The box (with help from her more worldly sister) tells Pandora what she needs: a hair cut, cigarettes, a drink, other boxes. Until we are compelled to ask: what will she give up to have everything that money can buy? And will she find her way back again?

Pandora's Boxes was inspired by playwright Denise O'Leary's travels in the East, where she saw first hand how modern marketing, and television in particular, was infiltrating traditional ways of life. While the play's inception was in an internet cafe in India, O'Leary's language is universal and this production places us in an unnamed eastern European country. With echoes of Gogol and Beckett, this modern day fable may well make you query your own lifestyle.

“Denise O'Leary's script is terrific.” Alan Hindle,

With Margarita Nazarenko, Charles Church, Richard Holt, Jacob Trenerry and Stuart James
