This autumn the New Stagers will be performing "The Last Days of Judas Iscariot" by Stephen Adly Giurgis.

Giurgis is one of New York's most exciting playwrights. His latest play is 'The Motherf**ker With the Hat' is currently on Broadway and marks the stage acting debut of the comic Chris Rock. His script writing credits include 'The Sopranos' for television and 'Jesus Hopped the A Train' for the stage.

In Judas we are transported to Purgatory where Judas is on trial for the betrayal of Jesus. Guirgis sets the action in an imagined New York suburb. St. Monica has become a streetwalker and Simon the Zealot a street punk. The play is by turns vicious and comic. It asks major questions of faith and religion.

It's an 18 strong cast show directed by two of New Stagers most experienced directors. Mike Ainsworth, whose previous credits include 'Wit' (Wimbledon Studios) and Kat Young director of 'Skirmishes' who also works with Arc Theatre in Barking.

They have re-imagined the setting as a TV studio. "My idea of purgatory resembles the Jeremy Kyle show – so that's where we set it" – Mike Ainsworth.

Praise for 'The Last Days of Judas Iscariot':

"Stephen Adly Guirgis has written a real jaw-dropper...expressionistic fantasy...raw language and flamboyantly street-savvy characters...his imagination is dazzling and his command of language downright thrilling." -Variety.

" of the most passionate and powerful young playwrights to have come down the theatrical runway...a must for anyone interested in the work of thoughtful and original playwrights." -CurtainUp.

"An extraordinary play...not since Angels in America have I seen a play so unafraid to acknowledge the power of the spirit..." -The Guardian (UK).

This amateur production is presented by arrangement with Josef Weinberger Limited
