THE LIGHTS is a dark journey through an unnamed American city whose structure and society is crumbling. Frederic and Lillian, a young couple, both experience a separate night of soulful derangement after a heated argument splits them up. We follow the misadventures of this modern-day Hansel and Gretel as they get lost among the shadows of an urban underworld. Over 24 hours on seemingly lawless streets, they encounter myriad faces of the city, from the pavement to the penthouse.

Writer Howard Korder is a Pulitzer Prize nominee who is best known for his screenwriting (HBO's Boardwalk Empire). This is the first UK revivial of THE LIGHTS since its original 1996 production at The Royal Court. In light of the recent London riots, this is a timely and relevant restaging of a journey through urban decay.

Director Hamish MacDougall's recent credits include the world premiere of Tennessee Williams’ I Never Get Dressed Till After Dark on Sundays, and the UK revival of Edward Bond’s The Under Room, at The Cock Tavern Theatre.

The first UK revival of THE LIGHTS also marks the launch of brand new London performance space The Spring. THE LIGHTS takes full advantage of the unique interior architecture of this post-industrial Vauxhall warehouse, a fascinating South London discovery and a venue for many varied and exciting future productions.

Define Choice is dedicated to producing ambitious performances which put actors at the forefront. As well as providing a platform for artists, every show is produced alongside a project-related charity who receive a donation from the profits. This production of THE LIGHTS benefits Launchpad, who support homeless individuals and those with associated problems including drug and alcohol misuse, mental health issues, unemployment, lack of confidence and self-esteem, and offending history.
