About: The House of Special Purpose

Ekaterinberg, 1918. A wooden stockade surrounds a requisitioned house. Inside, the deposed Tsar of Russia, his wife, four daughters and invalid teenage son are imprisoned under the watch of raw Communist recruits. The girls are on the brink of womanhood, their parents bowed beneath the weight of an all-consuming marriage. For one brief and airless summer, the House of Special Purpose holds them all within its walls.

This is the first London production of the play.

Heidi Thomas won the John Whiting Award in 1985 with her play Shamrocks and Crocodiles. Indigo was performed
by the RSC in 1987, followed by Some Singing Blood at the Royal Court. Until the staging of The House of Special
Purpose at Chichester (2010), Heidi had concentrated on screen writing, including the original BBC TV series Lilies, adaptations of Madame Bovary, Ballet Shoes and I Capture the Castle. Her screenplays for the multi awardwinning Cranford earned her BAFTA and Emmy nominations.

Jessica Swale is Artistic Director of Red Handed Theatre Company. Recent credits include Bedlam (Shakespeare’s Globe), Palace of the End (Arcola), Winter (Theatre Newfoundland), The Rivals, The Belle’s Stratagem (Southwark), Finding Alice (UK tour) and The Tempest (Balkans). She is author of the best selling Drama Games series for Nick Hern Books and is currently writing her first play, Blue Stockings.
