Barbican
by AfroReggae

About: AfroReggae -From the Favela to the World

Directed by José Junior
Co-directed by Johayne Ildefonso
Art direction by Gringo Cardia

Presented in association with People’s Palace Productions

With support from Queen Mary, University of London

Co-produced by barbicanbite06

Created in the wake of a brutal police massacre in the early 1990s, AfroReggae turn their socially conscious songs into blistering live performances. Their musical militancy is a forceful alternative to gunfire. Following sell out performances in bite06, AfroReggae return for two nights only.

From the Favela to the World brings to the Barbican stage a base-line experience of Brazilian culture: the beat of the favela, the shanty-town sound. Their multi-style performance is a skilful combination of the most vital movements in Brazilian culture, from Tropicalismo to mangue beat, from Paulista rap to samba-reggae, from capoeira to carioca funk.

Running time: 105 mins / no interval

Post Show Talk 28 June
