Despite attracting interest from some of the best theatre companies in London, none have dared to produce The Supper Party. Playwright A.J. Evans, highly praised for her sharp dialogue and black humour, has now made a bold decision: "They told me my play was too controversial. I disagreed – so I'm putting it on myself." (Script reviews quoted on page 2.)

The Supper Party, directed by Eleanor Teasdale, is having its first run at Alison's local theatre, the OSO in Barnes, London, SW13. Already eagerly awaited by seasoned theatre-goers, this one-week public performance offers a chance to see this controversial play premiered in a test run before it moves on to a more central venue.

Inspired by real life scenarios, The Supper Party seeks to challenge the morality behind the current cultural climate – a climate in which the lives of both celebrities and ordinary people are regularly exploited by journalists and the media in the name of entertainment. How much damage does it do – not just to the targets of such attention but to us, the consumers? Are those ubiquitous confessional columns just harmless fun? Or, as party guest Dr Andrew Harper argues, does this constant diet of ‘pap and propaganda' degrade us all, rendering us passive and unreflective?

On the face of it The Supper Party is a comedy of manners with all its sniping, flirting and cringe-making moments, but beyond its entertainment value the play is actually a lively debate about the age of consent, the hypocrisy surrounding child abuse and cultural responsibility. Performing as the exploitative, self-seeking bunch of party guests are a carefully chosen professional cast of nine including Emma Vansittart (Johnny English Reborn, RSC) who, as the hostess, watches her supper party rapidly descend from dreaded but harmless charades into a full-blown horror-show; Rachael Henley (Chronicles of Narnia: the Lion, the Witch & the Wardrobe) playing a young actress who, over the evening, is introduced to the politics and sleaze surrounding her profession, and Sara Dee (Kill List, Sightseers), a successful journalist who is publicly humiliated by a most unwelcome guest, played by promising newcomer Raphael Verrion.

Through the play's device of laying bare the content of our current media diet, the audience unintentionally become the consumers of this ‘pap' without escape. Lady Cynthia's undercooked blackbirds and spit-roast suckling pig cannot entirely be blamed for a profound sense of discomfort as the party draws to an untimely close.
