Bill Aitchison Company – Indifference

For Indifference Bill Aitchison is joined by Katja Dreyer and the two of them, like degenerate Club Med entertainers, make a performance with the most lofty ideas around freewill and determinism using the most disposable of materials: group dances like The Birdie Dance, The Macarena and The Papaya! Karl Marx on a beach in Hawaii, dry ice, the voice of God and critiques of freedom are all brought into play in a subtle and politically charged performance that defies classification or conclusion but continues to question and amuse nonetheless.

Biography
“Bill Aitchison is a performance artist and artistic director of Bill Aitchison Company. He works in and between performance, writing, video and audio, and collaborates with theatre, sound and visual artists. His priority is live performances in which the spectator experiences the danger of the moment and the feeling of being part of something unrepeatable. His performances are both rigorously structured and dynamic in their execution. Each are significantly different, though as a whole they are typically open-ended, physically precise and use humour.

His work plays upon the dividing lines of the personal and the public, and those between art and everyday life. As well as using theatres and galleries in very different and precise ways he sometimes places his shows in living city spaces creating levels of complicity between performer and spectator. His performances can be living situations but so too can they be tightly rehearsed theatre works. Sometime they are both.

He has been making solo performances and original collaborative work for eighteen years, showing his performances in theatres, galleries and festivals such as UK: British Council Edinburgh Showcase, The Bluecoat, Wallspace, ICA, BAC, CPT, OMSK, South London Gallery, Whitechapel Gallery, Showroom, Chelsea Theatre. US: NYC International Fringe, The Brick Williamsburg, France: Infr’action Festival, Belgium: Playground Festival STUK, Netherlands: Melkweg, Koninklijke Schouwburg, Grand Theatre Groningen, Germany: Plateaux Festival, Wunder der Präire, KammerMachen, Artheater Köln, Orangerie Köln, Croatia, Art Radioniza Lazareti Dubrovnik, Israel: ZAZ Festival Performance Art Platform Tel Aviv, The Lab Jerusalem, China: Open Performance Art Festival Beijing, Bookworm International Literary Festival Beijing, CEAC Xiamen, Xiamen University, Iran: IIFUT Festival Tehran

His work has been supported by Arts Council England, The British Council and Live Art Magazine and he has produced his work internationally with partners in Belgium, Germany and China. Bill has made a number of videos, books and audio works for exhibitions and several audio recordings for radio. He regularly works in different roles in collaborative projects. He is a highly experienced performer and co-writer, and he has advised many events and productions in the fields of dance, video and theatre. With his two most regular artistic partners, Ivana Muller and Julia Lee Barclay/Apocryphal, he has created and performed a number of original works that have been seen widely in Europe, America and Asia. For a full list of his collaborations see HERE.

Bill completed a practice-based PhD at Goldsmiths College, University of London in 2007 entitled From A-Z to II-VI: Integrating Corporeal Mime into a Performance Art Practice. Additionally he has published critical articles and reviews, taught both performance and writing and presented his work at talks and conferences.” For Indifference Bill Aitchison is joined by Katja Dreyer and the two of them, like degenerate Club Med entertainers, make a performance with the most lofty ideas around freewill and determinism using the most disposable of materials: group dances like The Birdie Dance, The Macarena and The Papaya!
