Prostitutes cleaned off the streets ahead of the Olympics

The Olympics, Moscow 1980. The streets have been cleaned and the working girls shipped out to isolated hostels. Here they share their hopes and dreams while they wait for the Olympic Torch to pass by.

Premiered by Lev Dodin and the Maly Theatre in 1987, Alexander Galinís angry and poetic drama explores the underbelly of a great international celebration. An acclaimed playwright and film director, Galinís films include The Casualty, Casanovaís Overcoat and The Photo, while his plays have been performed in over 200 theatres around the world.

Michael Glennyís translations include works by Gogol, Dostoevsky, Gorky, Bulgakov and Solzhenitsyn as well as the memoirs of Boris Yeltsin. He was the author of several works on Russian literature. Cathy Porterís translations include plays by Gorky and Karel Čapek.
She has published biographies of the Russian Revolutionaries Alexandra Kollontai and Larissa Reisner, as well as books about women terrorists of the 1860s, the 1905 revolution and the Battle of Moscow.

Jonathan Cullen is an actor, director and teacher. He appeared most recently in Dr Faustus at Shakespeareís Globe. His directing credits include work at Guildhall, Rose Bruford, Globe Theatre Education Department and Chichester. He has been visiting guest Professor at Duke University, North Carolina and taught at the American Conservatory Theatre School in San Francisco. He previously directed The Stone at RADA in 2009.
