About: Cymbeline

Set in the corrupt and incompetent court of England, sophisticated salons of antique Rome and the warm hearted but secret court in Exile in Wales, Cymbeline, with its romance form and fairy tale motifs, is rich in psychological and political detail; it is tragedy, comedy, romance and melodrama by turns and sweeps to a triumphant last scene with its multiple revelations and satisfying conclusion.

The play’s heroine, Imogen, is a blend of the beautiful princesses of fairy tale and the practical but emotionally naïve cross dressers of Shakespeare’s comedies; but throughout this very complicated and enthralling plot, her goodness, determination, experience of grief, humanity and very real heroism shine through, and make her one of his most successful creations.

Nona Shepphard is a freelance writer and director with over 150 productions and 40 commissioned plays to her credit. Her plays for young people, which have received several awards, have been seen in USA, Canada, Europe and Russia. Her recent writing includes Signs of a Star-Shaped Diva for Graeae Theatre Company/Theatre Royal Stratford and Therese Raquin, a musical version of Emile Zola’s novel; last Christmas, she directed Dick Whittington for the Gatehouse Theatre, Stafford; she is an Associate Director of RADA and Artistic Director of RADA Enterprises.
