About: The Tinker's Wedding and The Shadow of The Glen

The Tinker’s Wedding and The Shadow of the Glen written by J.M Synge

“ I do not think that these country people, who have so much humour themselves, will mind being laughed at in their own comedies.” J.M Synge

The Union Theatre’s resident director, Aoife Smyth, is directing The Tinker’s Wedding and associate director, Ben De Wynter, is directing The Shadow of the Glen. Both have received beautiful notices for previous works under the Union arch and this is a chance for these two directors, usually involved with new writing, to work on two established pieces. Synge’s evocative language, imagery of isolation and quirky storytelling gives them a sturdy foundation on which to build their individual productions.

“All credit must be given to a brilliantly directed cast under the faultless tutelage of Aoife Smyth. Absolute Bliss ! “ Dale Maitland Cartwright.

“ De Wynter comes up trumps again with a production of serious ambition and proper fringe daring that brings the kind of “rough theatre” magic to this musical.” Mark Shenton.

Aoife, having directed the critically acclaimed Spring Awakening, is now going back to her roots with Synge’s controversial comedy that depicts the harshness of the Tinker’s life and Sarah Casey’s need to gain respect from society in the form of the clergy.

Ben, after his forage into commercial theatre, returns to direct Synge’s mischievous farce, The Shadow of the Glen. Steeped in a loneliness that lies at the heart of the human condition, it tells the story of a husband that feigns death to learn of his wife’s true feelings.

Aoife Smyth trained as a director at Drama Centre London and graduated in 2005. She has directed Blithe Spirit (Studio Moliere, Vienna), Impostors, Treehouses, Spring Awakening (Union Theatre), Maria Stuart, Romeo und Julia (Vienna Kindertheater), Who Knows?, Everyman, The Only Jealousy of Emer (Dry Ice, Dublin)

She has worked as an assistant for Shared Experience, The Young Vic and The Good Company.

Ben De Wynter was associate director on the Donmar’s award-winning Guys and Dolls, resident director on the tour of the National’s award-winning My Fair Lady, assisted Howard Davies on The Breath of Life with Judi Dench and Maggie Smith and Robert Strura on The Seagull with Kate Beckinsale and Michael Sheen. Mike Leigh mentored his production of Smelling A Rat. He’s directed over thirty productions including tours to Canada and the critically acclaimed Cabaret with Sasha Regan. He is founder member of Slipstream Productions (winners with the Union, of the MMRS award at The Peter Brook Empty Space Awards). Ben is a member of the Magic Circle (magical advisor on Dr. Faustus, A Comedy of Errors and Pippin).
