Spend a lovely summers evening in the cool union arches Aboard the H.M.S. Pinafore.

Up and coming director Thom Southerland has created an exciting new version of this witty classic for the Union’s summer audience. With a large all male cast, there will be singing and dancing a-plenty as sailors and crew get ready to sail.

The Union Theatre has gradually gained, over the last 10years, a reputation for staging good musicals, new and old.

“The Union Theatre, a tiny but versatile ‘found’ space beneath a railway arch in Southwark that is dripping in atmosphere, has been carving out an impressive little niche for making musical discoveries and re-discoveries over the last few years with pint-sized productions of Kander and Ebb’s Cabaret and the London premiere of Michael John LaChiusa’s The Wild Party. It now comes up trumps again with a production of serious ambition and proper fringe daring that brings the kind of ‘rough theatre’ magic to this musical that is all to do with conjuring effects (and some emotion) from thin air.” Mark Shenton – What’s on Stage

Sasha Regan is pleased to have found a new director of musical theatre in Thomas Southerland and between them they have decided to mount this exciting and slightly tongue in cheek production of H.M.S Pinafore.

Thomas Southerland graduated form Rose Bruford College in 2005, with a degree in directing. Thomas’ credits include; “I sing “ starring Joanna Ampil & Debbie Kurrup (U.K Premier Union Theatre), “Easy to Love” (BAC). Assistant director to John Doyle on “Mack and Mabel” (Newbury and West End) and “Man of la Mancha” (BAC).

“Regan and De Wynter’s success is that they send it up slightly while still believing in it. They walk that tight rope between being knowing and fresh-faced, which rather suits this tale of innocence matured by experience…It is also wonderfully atmospheric. In many ways it is reminiscent of the good old days of the BAC Christmas musical. Here under the railway arches it is the embodiment of the dash and swagger of the fringe.” On Pippin .Lyn Gardner – The Guardian ***
