The Place
The Last Refuge is a brand new open arts space comprising a Theatre, Film Production Company, Bar and Rehearsal Space. Started in November 2011, we have hit the ground sprinting by completely renovating three spaces in Copeland Road Industrial Park, in Peckham Rye.

The Season
From September
to December 2012 we will
host an incredible 22
companies, all of which
have been given both
rehearsal and performance
space free of charge. We
believe that you shouldn’t have to pay to play.

Our season begins with the revival of Confetti by Nicola Baldwin, produced by Furious Theatre – a group of inspirational women who were all involved in making this show 20 years ago. They reunite for the very first production at The Last Refuge. We continue with two brand new pieces, How A Man Crumbled presented by Clout and the ‘silent disco’-esque A Tale of Gilead from Featherweight.

Thornton Wilder’s classic Our Town opens October, followed by a week of
new writing directed by Natalie Ibu of We Were Here. We then play host to the UK premiere of Samm Art-Williams Home.

Another world premiere takes us through November – The 1033 Project, a piece that was developed at The Last Refuge, followed by a one man version of Phaedra.

December begins with out very own ‘anti panti’ – Beyond Beauty by esteemed writer Ron Hutchinson, a delightfully gothic take on the classic Sleeping Beauty story. Our season concludes with Una, a devised piece from the International Rainbows, the tale of Una Marson – a feminist, activist and Peckham resident in the 1940s.

Amongst all this, every Sunday we will be playing host to a ‘One Night Stand’: a different company with a one-off, exclusive performance.

The People
The Last Refuge is made up of a group of women striving for quality and equality in the arts. Founded by Rania Jumaily and Laura Crampsie, a theatre director and writer/filmmaker respectively and friends since childhood, their aim was to bring a permanent theatre space to Peckham. After visiting the site, they fell in love with the space and felt that the location and community were lacking a venue that collates all aspects of the arts. The team have been working together to create an open space that can offer something unique to Peckham Rye.
