About: The Burial at Thebes - translated by Seamus Heaney

This dramatic tale of conflict between personal loyalties and responsibility to the state has a raw emotional impact. Antigone’s brother lies where he fell in rebellion against the authorities. Her uncle, King Creon, outlaws his burial. Antigone’s appalling dilemma is to obey Creon and offend against the gods, or to follow her heart and plunge her accursed family into a fresh cycle of violence.

The startling modernity of the story is all the more evident in Heaney's poetic and accessible translation. His spare, muscular verse also has a remarkably epic and lyrical quality, giving the production a combination of innate grace and austerity.

Seamus Heaney is a Nobel Prize-winning poet whose works include an acclaimed translation of Beowulf, the poetry collection North, and The Cure at Troy – an adaptation of Sophocles’ Philoctetes.

Director Lucy Pitman-Wallace’s credits include Eastward Ho!, part of the RSC Swan Season, which won the Olivier Award for Outstanding Achievement of the Year in 2003; the revival of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe for the RSC at Sadler's Wells, and Waiting for Godot and Gregory Burke’s Unsecured at the National Theatre. Lucy was nominated for the TMA Best Director Award for The Burial at Thebes at Nottingham Playhouse in 2006.

‘A gripping theatrical tour-de-force.’

‘Engrossing to watch – and to listen to.’
