About: Gilgamesh

This radical reinterpretation of Gilgamesh, the oldest story in the world, is high-energy, brutal and multi-layered theatre. Three actors in a seven metre-long dirt pit wrestle and roll through four tonnes of earth. Using action figures and Matchbox toy tanks, they retell the 5000 year-old story of tyrannical ruler Gilgamesh and his destructive friend Enkidu.

It's a richly imaginative world of gods, kings, rappers and wrestlers, conjured up through a riotous form of child's play. Epic theatre, played out on a tiny scale, with a thrash metal soundtrack.

Uncle Semolina (& Friends) is a multi-award-winning Melbourne theatre company. It has a reputation for creating performances with a uniquely inventive theatrical vocabulary. Inspired by the idea of playing, its productions make creative use of sets, props and sound-scapes.

The company often creates theatre in non-traditional spaces; shop-fronts, shipping containers and giant cardboard boxes have all provided a stage for previous productions. Gilgamesh was a sell-out at the 2005 Melbourne International Arts Festival.
