About: Romeo & Juliet

William Shakespeare's
Romeo & Juliet
Presented by Theatre Sotto Voce
21st February – 9th March 2013
Holy Trinity Church, Sloane Square, London, SW1
A candle-lit, site-specific production of Romeo and Juliet underscored by a live choir, singing Renaissance polyphony as well as two newly-commissioned musical works. The play will be performed and produced by talented emerging artists and will reach disadvantaged and special needs children in south London through a free ticket scheme and youth and sensory workshops.

Originally planned for Durham Cathedral, aka Professor McGonagall's classroom, the director's music degree got in the way. Four years later, after numerous obstacles and the pull-out of a major sponsor one month before the production, the sheer bloody-mindedness of our production team has ensured that the show must go on.

Theatre Sotto Voce was founded by Emma Butler and is committed to using music to enhance the theatrical experience and to creating fresh and imaginative work through devising, developing new writing and revitalising classics. With this project we wish to inspire children to have passion and enthusiasm for Shakespeare. We are planning a series of free Shakespeare workshops for a local school as well as sensory workshops for special needs children, for which our music-centred show will be perfect.

We want to give the work of lesser-known composers the kind of airing rarely experienced in the setting
they were originally written for. Polyphony will float above love scenes and as unity is reached in the action, so harmony will be reached in the underscore, music echoing words at every turn. Two new works have been commissioned specifically for the project. A musical theme running through the first half will break down and distort through the death scenes of Mercutio and Tybalt. Enhanced by aggressive drumming, the fighters will almost dance through a sequence where sticks and swords are interchangeable.

Emma Butler, Director: Postgrad Diploma in Theatre Direction, Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts and BA in Music, Durham University. Since finishing her training she has worked as an assistant director at Shakespeare's Globe; been a young director on The Globe to Globe Festival also at Shakespeare's Globe; co-directed two operas at The Sage Gateshead and worked on various projects on the London Fringe.

George Richford, Composer & Musical Director: BA Music, Durham & Chapel Choir Director. Many live and recorded works with the choir and annual tours. He is a published composer and music author and has been commissioned by the International Choir & Organ Magazine, Chicago University and King's School Canterbury, Gresham's School, Hexham Abbey, to name a few. In 2009 his setting of the Angel Gabriel for choir, harp and organ was broadcast on BBC Radio 3 to much critical acclaim.
