Hoxton Hall History

Hoxton Hall has a dramatic and colourful past spanning nearly 150 years. The centre of the complex, is a beautiful and atmospheric music hall theatre built in 1863; it is a unique example of the intimate saloon style halls (1 of only 4 in the country), and the only survivor of the Shoreditch halls, which attracted London-wide audiences in the mid 19thC. The physical heritage features remain clear and present to all who visit, ornate cast iron balustrades, wooden structural columns with guilt tops, dressing rooms, centre stage access, high music hall stage and Saloon – horse shoe shape balconies – where by the audience seems only an arm's reach from centre stage. Smaller features of fireplaces, gas lamps, original seating and arches formed on the walls all add to the overall rich atmosphere.
In 1910 Palmer / Quaker extension was built, comprising the education and informal learning rooms – functionary addition, purist and utilitarian in style – with some key and stunning heritage features which include Palmer Room Oriel bay windows. Carpet Room – Dormer with windows and linked by a light well, with ghost lines for the former farm houses with an arrange of doors, stunning but damaged windows and front and rear stair wells, all linking the 1863 building with 1910.

1977 saw the rise of Community arts and the last major refurbishment. Added facilities included the female WC's, new entrance, heat and light (M&E) upgrade, theatre lights. Without these developments Hoxton Hall would not have survived today.

Throughout it's history Hoxton Hall has always fulfilled a evolving functionary role in the local community from music hall stage for the ‘humbler classes' to home for street girls and child prostitutes under the Girls Guild c.1926 to air raid shelter during WWII.
