Shoreditch Town Hall History

Built in 1865, Shoreditch Town Hall is a magnificent Grade II landmark building adjacent to Hoxton Square and just minutes from Liverpool Street. One of the first Town Halls in the UK to incorporate a purpose built theatre auditorium, in the Victorian era it was at the heart of the East London Music Hall scene, regularly hosting evenings of entertainment.

In the early 1900s the Victorian Vestry Hall, the Council Chamber (once thought of one of the grandest halls in London) hosted the inquest into Jack the Ripper’s final victim, Mary Kelly. In more recent history, it acted as a boxing venue during the 1960s, while the early 1990s saw it become home to the now infamous Whirl-Y-Gig club nights.

Shoreditch Town Hall Launched its first season of theatre and performance in 2012 under the current artistic director Nick Giles, including Paines Plough’s Roundabout. Since then the programme has grown markedly with artists and companies such as curious directive, Theatre Ad Infinitum, Greg Wohead, Analogue, Gandini Juggling, Hoke’s Bluff, Nigel Barrett & Louise Mari and many more using many of its nine principle spaces regularly for both artist development and a cutting edge programme of theatre and performance. The Town Hall’s basement was also the venue for the first incarnation of Philip Pullman’s Grimm Tales in 2014.

Nurturing artists and supporting the creation of new work is a core part of their work, investing time and resources, and vitally spaces within the building to be used for rehearsals and development.

The Town Hall is an independent charitable Trust, and as such does not, nor ever has received revenue funding from our local authority or other funding body.
